Why Can Carbon Monoxide Catalysts Remove Toxic CO Efficiently?

Efficient CO Removal Relies on Lowering Activation Energy and Accelerating Oxidation Reactions

The reason carbon monoxide catalysts can efficiently remove toxic CO is not because they directly absorb or destroy carbon monoxide. Instead, they significantly reduce the activation energy required for the oxidation reaction between CO and oxygen. This allows a reaction that would normally proceed very slowly at ambient conditions to occur rapidly at room temperature or relatively low temperatures. Active sites on the catalyst surface adsorb both CO and oxygen molecules, facilitating their reaction to form carbon dioxide (CO₂). Therefore, catalyst activity, surface area, redox properties, and operating conditions collectively determine CO removal efficiency.

Why Is Carbon Monoxide Difficult to Remove Naturally?

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and highly toxic gas. Although the oxidation of CO to CO₂ is thermodynamically favorable, the reaction proceeds extremely slowly under normal atmospheric conditions.

The primary reason is the high activation energy barrier associated with the reaction. Even when CO and oxygen coexist in air, spontaneous oxidation occurs at a negligible rate. As a result, relying solely on natural oxidation is generally insufficient in enclosed spaces, industrial gas purification systems, and other environments where CO control is critical.

This challenge is one of the key reasons why catalytic oxidation technology has become the preferred solution for carbon monoxide removal.

How Do Catalysts Accelerate CO Oxidation?

The primary function of a catalyst is to provide a highly active reaction surface.

When a gas stream containing carbon monoxide passes through a catalyst bed, CO molecules are first adsorbed onto active sites on the catalyst surface. At the same time, oxygen molecules are also adsorbed and activated. The activated species then react on the catalyst surface to form carbon dioxide, which subsequently desorbs and leaves the catalyst.

Throughout this process, the catalyst itself is not consumed. Instead, it continuously participates in the reaction cycle and maintains its catalytic function.

The overall reaction can be represented as:

2CO + O₂ → 2CO₂

By reducing the energy required for this reaction, the catalyst dramatically increases the reaction rate, enabling efficient purification of CO-containing gas streams.

Why Do Copper-Manganese Composite Catalysts Exhibit High Activity?

Hopcalite-type catalysts widely used in industry are primarily composed of copper oxides and manganese oxides.

These materials possess excellent redox properties. When carbon monoxide contacts the catalyst surface, rapid electron transfer occurs between manganese and copper species, generating active oxygen species that promote the oxidation of CO into CO₂.

In addition, these catalysts typically feature high surface areas and well-developed pore structures, providing a large number of active sites and improving gas-solid contact efficiency.

As a result, high CO conversion rates can be achieved even at ambient or relatively low operating temperatures.

What Factors Influence CO Removal Efficiency?

In practical applications, catalyst performance depends not only on catalyst composition but also on operating conditions.

Humidity is one of the most important factors. Many Hopcalite catalysts are sensitive to moisture, and excessive water vapor may occupy active sites, leading to a reduction in catalytic activity.

Gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) is another critical parameter. If the gas flow rate is too high, residence time inside the catalyst bed decreases, limiting contact between CO and the catalyst and reducing conversion efficiency.

Furthermore, contaminants such as oil mist, sulfur-containing compounds, chlorides, and particulate matter may poison active sites or block catalyst pores, negatively affecting long-term performance.

For this reason, industrial systems typically include pretreatment processes such as filtration, oil removal, and gas drying before the catalyst bed.

Where Are Carbon Monoxide Catalysts Commonly Used?

Due to their high efficiency, safety, and ability to operate continuously, carbon monoxide catalysts are used across a wide range of industries.

In air separation units and high-purity gas production systems, catalysts convert trace amounts of CO into CO₂, which can then be removed by downstream adsorption equipment.

In respiratory protection equipment, catalysts help reduce toxic carbon monoxide concentrations and improve user safety.

Catalytic oxidation technology is also widely applied in enclosed shelters, underground facilities, emergency rescue systems, and specialized industrial gas purification processes.

As industries such as electronics manufacturing, semiconductor production, specialty gases, and high-purity gas processing continue to demand lower impurity levels, the importance of efficient CO removal technologies continues to grow.

Summary

Carbon monoxide catalysts achieve efficient CO removal by lowering the activation energy required for oxidation reactions and providing abundant active sites that promote rapid conversion of CO into CO₂. Copper-manganese composite catalyst systems offer excellent redox performance and high surface area, enabling efficient operation at room temperature or relatively low temperatures. In practical applications, humidity control, appropriate space velocity, and contaminant management are essential for maintaining catalyst performance. For air purification, high-purity gas production, respiratory protection, and industrial gas treatment, catalytic oxidation remains one of the most mature, reliable, and effective technologies available for carbon monoxide removal.
